“Taking flood mitigation seriously means genuine action based on a Reconnaissance Plan”

Several Democratic members of the Westchester County Board of Legislators (BOL) expressed their appreciation of the “announcement” today from County Executive Rob Astorino that the County was ready to move forward with $8 million in capital projects toward flood mitigation, but added that he is still not complying with storm water legislation that he signed into law a year ago.

It is hard to fathom which is more disconcerting, County Executive Rob Astorino’ s ill-considered plan to charge mostly poor families in Westchester an extra $120 a month for subsidized child care, while most still grapple with the worst effects of the recession, or the cavalier manner in which he has gone about the change. Both no doubt will have consequences beyond the poor and middle-income people for whom Astorino, once again, shows his disdain.

Rebuke Follows “Emergency Action” on Child Care Based on Analysis Not Shared with Board

Last December, when the Westchester County Board of Legislators (BOL) overrode County Executive Astorino’s vetoes of two acts that restored $4.3 million of child care subsidies for low-income workers, it was acknowledged by child care advocates and community leaders that the move was right for Westchester.

The data used to make the decision came from the Astorino Administration.

Westchester County Board Chairman Ken Jenkins (D-Yonkers) today announced that he has made his recommendations Standing Committees and his selections for Committee Chairs for the 2012-2013 legislative term. Committee membership will be announced next week. “I am pleased to recommend these capable men and women to chair the Board’s Committees during this legislative term. We have much work to do and many challenges facing our county. I know that these Legislators will be able to deliver the responsible and accessible government that the residents of Westchester have called for to help move our county in the right direction.” Two committees have been eliminated during the 2012-2013 term.
